Detaching the human connection in a Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) system for unlimited Effluent reuse

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) system is a well known method for treating water and effluent polishing for water reuse. The principle is simply to introduce water or effluent into a recharge basin, let the water be cleaned during infiltration through the unsaturated zone and stored within the saturated zone, and later be pumped out for unlimited agricultural uses.

Despite the simplicity of the SAT system, organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization recommend this method along with advanced technologies such as reverse osmosis and advance filtration and oxidation processes.

The Shafdan SAT system treats secondary effluent supplied by the Shafdan Waste Water Treatment Plant. The effluent is introduced into more than 50 recharge basins, covering an area of about 5 acres (20,000 m2) each and summing to a total recharge area of about 270 acres.

The research motivation was to examine the impact of the SAT system on water quality (especially bacteriolocal quality). To do so, we examined all four parts of the Shafdan SAT: (I) the inlet - secondary effluent produced by the Shadan WWTP; (II) specific examination of the unsaturated zone; (III) thorough examination of the saturated zone, i.e. reclaimed water from recovery wells that reclaim 100% Effluent Origin Water and finally (IV) the background water quality of the regional aquifer.

The research approves that the microbial quality of the Shafdan reclaimed water is excellent, including the nearest recovery wells (70 m). For the first time, extensive survey conducted in a short period of time in the Shafdan SAT CCS with a focus on the unsaturated zone performance, reveals perfect removal of viruses and numerous bacteria from human origin.
