A group of students from Hadassah Academic College meets every week as part of a special project that simulates UN operations. They have discussions on newsworthy and relevant topics that will assist them in their future careers. They cover advocacy, persuasion, and methods to acquire additional tools in order to thrive in business and international arenas.
Based on a model UN structure, students have formal discussions in various committees representing areas like the Security Council, International Court and Economic and Human Rights.
The purpose of the discussions is to reach agreements with other student members in their group. They communicate the needs of their chosen countries (not necessarily their countries of birth) by maintaining protocol and procedures in a diplomatic manner. Through speeches, political tools, such as the media, they learn to persuade, understand and communicate on an international scale.
The project began during this school year, and 15 students participate in the political and media circles, and management of service organizations. Led by students Danya Avner (Photographic Communications) and David Bayliss (Management of Service Organizations), students gather weekly for UN model-based discussions. In addition to gaining invaluable knowledge and experience from this program, graduates receive three academic credits in place of electives.
Students brought additional pride and recognition to the college by participating in two national student group conferences: one conference had 220 participants and another had 120. Some of the students won prizes for demonstrating their excellent diplomatic skills. They also hosted their friends at the college from various UN clubs across the country for a workshop on international law.
An upcoming tour is planned for the UN headquarters and the Knesset, along with plans for additional national conferences.
