This week the college received the certification of the renewed ordination as a "Green Campus" from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, in the framework of the “National Green Campus” convention that took place at the Ben Gurion University. Dr. Geula Sharf, the head of the Environmental Sciences department received the certificate in the name of the college and also presented the environmental activities that have taken place as well as those that are planned to be done in the near future at the college.
Six years ago the college received the ordination from the Ministry of Environmental Protection as a “Green Campus”. However the college has been active according to the criteria and ethics of a green campus for many years, including, minimizing water and energy resources, encouraging recycling and student activities in the surroundings and in the community. These actions have resulted in minimizing the use of electricity in the college infrastructures as well, over the last two years. In addition The Helmsley Building, the new building of the college was built according to the criteria of “Green Building".
In addition, over the last two years, hundreds of students from the college have participated in different activities for the quality of the environment. Tens of activities such as: constructing and renovating parks in neglected areas in the city. Rehabilitating communal parks in the center of the city. Activities for girls in Eastern Jerusalem in regards to caring for the environment. A project for increasing awareness for recycling and working with the teens in the Muslim quarter. The “From teens to the thicket” project that took place in the Tzippori Center for deaf and hearing impaired teens – Jews and Arabs. A project for building benches out of recycled materials with youth at risk and many other activities.
Professor Bertland Friedlander, the president of the College and Chairman of the Green Council of the College: “The environmental activities that take place in the College are praiseworthy and the acknowledgement of the Ministry of Environmental Protection only encourages us to continue with our activities. The activities are a message for the College faculty, the students and the community we live in".
Dr. Geula Sharf, the head of the Environmental Sciences Department in the College: “We have been doing a lot in the last few years in the field of environmental quality, and are not planning to rest. We plan on increasing our activities and have already started promoting, with the recommendations of the Green Council of the college, building an experimental solar station on the main lawn compound".
