The Department of Optometry is in the midst of Vision screening tests to locate sight issues in the community, patients that need glasses will get them for free. The project takes place for three weeks and in cooperation with with a non profit organization from the US where optometrists, opticians and eye doctors come to do complete eye sight testing. There are students of the department integrated in this project in order to contribute to the community on the one hand and also gather experience on the other. On one of the examination days a graduate from the department of optometry sciences that grew up in the absorption center in Mevasseret Zion where we did the testing joined us.
The head of the department Professor Ariela Gordon Shag tells us : "I can’t describe in words how exciting it was to be there and do the examinations. It filled our hearts and we felt that we had arrived at a part of the population that really needed it. We saw cases that we had never been exposed to before, since there were people there that never had access to eye services, you really did god's work yesterday"
During the project over 200 residents were checked in the absorption center of Mevasseret Zion. In another month more volunteers will be arriving from the US to give out glasses for free to whoever needs. Most of those checked were people who had never had their eyes checked in their lives.
