Second-year students in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences participated in a tour of the clinical microbiology laboratories at Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, under the management of Dr. Violeta Temper.

During the tour, students met Dr. Ayelet Gayego, a graduate of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at HAC, and today responsible for the molecular unit in the laboratory. She shared with students her personal story and professional and academic path from a laboratory assistant to a Master’s degree, and then her PhD. In addition, Ayelet shared her research interests, and her satisfaction in attaining her role as head of the laboratory that provides critical services to Hadassah Medical Center, and many other hospitals in the country.
During her lecture, Dr. Gayego spoke about various molecular methods, including real time PCR Ribotyping, and Multiplex PCR. The students heard fascinating clinical stories that demonstrated the immense importance of the medical laboratory and the lab employees in saving human lives.

The students learned about the multiple methods which are used in the microbiology laboratory, from cultivating methods to advanced methods such as MALDI TOF.
The laboratory staff warmly welcomed the students and were happy to host them throughout the visit.
