Biometry in Cataract Surgeries

To be offered in Spring 2024 – 2 credits (3 ECTS)

Jerusalem Multidisciplinary College's cutting-edge online course on biometry and premium lens calculations for cataract surgery will be taught by ophthalmologists and optometrists from the prestigious Biometry Service at Hadassah Medical Center.
Discover how to calculate and fit the optimal IOL for transplantation during cataract surgery in complex cases for each patient's unique needs - from monofocal to toric, multifocal, and EDOF lenses.

Course Structure

3 online study sessions (via Zoom) and 11 asynchronous lectures.

  • April 30th (14:15 IST)
  • June 18th (14:15 IST)
  • July 02nd (14:15 IST)

All lectures will be recorded and available for later viewing.

*Practical hands-on training opportunity in the Hadassah Medical Center Ophthalmology Department in Jerusalem is available for an additional fee.

Practical training in Hebrew on July 1st and 4th.
Practical training in English on September 12th.  

Learning Outcomes

  1. List and contrast between surgical cataract methods.
  2. Identify the existing intraocular lenses for implantation in cataract surgery, their optical effect, their advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Describe biometric imaging devices and other related instruments.
  4. Analyze the outputs of biometric imaging devices.
  5. Calculate intraocular lens powers based on common formulas and calculators.
  6. Independently calculate monofocal, torical, multifocal and EDOF lenses and adapt the ideal lens to the patient.
  7. Measure patients with biometric devices and other related instruments.
  8. Solve complex eye cases requiring advanced biometric and optometric calculations.

  • Case analysis assignments
  • Short quizzes to check understanding after every lecture

Practical Experience

Practical hands-on training opportunity is available at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. The practical training sessions will take place in September 2024.
